Mrs. Donovan

Meet Mrs. Donovan! Not only does she help us daily in the classroom but also with perfecting our handstands outside the classroom. Speaking of outdoor classrooms, Erin Donovan is spearheading the MDES Garden and Greenhouse Project. As a Master Gardener she will be implementing Science lessons this Spring - the students are thrilled! Thank you Mrs. Donovan for helping to shape healthy bodies, healthy minds.

Woah!

April Showers brings LOTS of reading! Students are taking a break from Non-Fiction to delve back into our favorite chapter series. How exciting when students make connections from places we've studied to places our characters venture to. Who knew Flat Stanley traveled to Mount Rushmore?!

Informational Checklist

Alas! We made it through our snow days and are back on track (for now)! Second graders are beginning to write their Informational All-About books. Students are asked to pick a topic they are experts at or know a lot about. Their job is to teach that topic to someone else. So far, each of us have created a list of ideas that include hobbies, people, places, etc. We have started talking about how to begin our informational stories. We learned in order to create an effective lead, we should first introduce our topic and share a fact that might interest our reader. Next week students will be working with a new checklist for this type of writing.

Math Practices

Given that it is almost half-way through our school year, it's a good time to refresh our minds with our 8 Mathematical Practices. In Grade 2 we focus on a few practices each math class. We review them before we start the lesson and reflect at the end about how we incorporated them. Read up on our Mathematical Practices below:

1. I can solve problems without giving up.

2. I can think about numbers in many ways.

3. I can explain my thinking and try to understand others.

4. I can show my work in many ways.

5. I can use math tools and explain why I used them.

6. I can work carefully and check my work.

7. I can use what I know to solve new problems.

8. I can solve problems by looking for rules and patterns.
